I have an unused room in house that is kept unheated now in the winter and the smoke detector is making a single beeping noise at intervals on nights when it is extremely cold. The only way to stop this noise is to turn on the heat in that room for a while. Anyone know why it could be doing this?

Your battery is on the verge of dying. Cold puts a strain on it, warmth gives it just enough juice to borderline power your detector. Go ahead and change your battery as it will die soon anyway.

It's NOT your batteries it's the difference in Temperatures, smoke detectors are not suppose to be installed where the temp drop below freezing( I think the Temperature range is 40 to 90 degrees) or above 120degrees, they're not suppose to be installed where the temperature will have such a dramatic change as well such as a unheated basement, keep the temp up or take the smoke detector down and risk No early warning.

My guess is it is a battery powerd detector, and the battery is getting low. Cold temperatures slow down the chemical reaction in a dry cell that makes electricity. it is probably dropping the battery's voltage enough for the detector to sound the "low battery" alarm - a beep every so often.

Put a new battery in and see if that helps.

Ours chirp when the batteries are low as well. Did you also know that they only last about 7-8 years before they need replacing? Could just be you need a new one.
