No I do not believe it is coincidental, but I will say this...I do think that this "holiday" is pointless because they really do not teach anything about the struggles faced or the majority of the people involved. It was made to keep people pacified and to make them all think something was being done almost as a retribution... and that is B.S. Some people say "where's white history month"? Are you F'ing serious??? What is this whole country based on/ run by/ the only men that have any say? HELLO??? come on people don't be so like "yeah what about me?" Because first of all we're all in this together. None of us are given complete information, and it is that way on purpose. Even in school who are the only people you hear about?? Not the hardcore revolutionaries and inventors from the past, no we all hear more current figures in the news and you know that means crappy coverage. This year they were like oh good accomplishment two black coaches do a great job. WHO CARES?? Too many people... And not enough peole question that we are ALL Shat upon and have been for many years, from the trail of tears to slavery in the first place. WE wouldn't be where we are if it weren't for white history being the dominant force here. Duh! And with all of that being said...

The month-long celebration was an expansion of ***** History Week, which was established in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, director of what was then known as the Association for the Study of ***** Life and History. Woodson selected the week in February that embraced the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln. This contradicts a common misconception about black history month; the celebration was not intentionally limited to the shortest month of the year.

February is the Black History Month because it might be significant to them and it just happen that it is the shortest month.

February is also the month Valentine's falls on. Let's change it to: Make A Mixed Baby Month. That way, everyone gets screwed! Sure would make for a much more interesting month! After a few generations, no one could tell the difference any more, so there'd be nothing to argue about.

Nope. We used to celebrate two very important president's birthdays duing this month. Elementary school teachers would go to great lengths to pass on the lore and legacy. Now, they've been surpassed by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.s birthday... We ignore the two presidents and instead, focus heavily on pandering to one specific community. Personally, I like what Teddy Roosevelt had to say about it all (he was actually referring to Irish-Amercans and Italian-Americans when he said it, but what he said is so true and poinient even today...), he said that all of these hyphenations are dividing America. Perhaps we should spend a whole lot less time focusing on our differences and more on our similarities... United we stand, divided we fall.

I've wondered that for many years. Perhaps we shouldn't separate the Blacks any more than they've been and make "Black history" part of American history--the way it happened and the way it should be.
