in the full metal alchemist, ed is in the national army....leutinent Ross called him "sir"....so whts his rank???

First, Ed is a State Alchemist. Second, Edward outranks Lieutenant Ross. Edward ranks as major. Ross ranks as Second Lieutenant. That's a three rank difference.

He's a State Alchemist. It's kinnda a different branch of the government.
State Alchemists work for the government like consultants, so it's not like Ed is higher or lower rank than Ross. She calls him "sir" probably because he's respected by Mustang & Armstrong, who are higher ranked than Ross.

He is automatically given the honorary title of Major, though they rarely mention his rank as he is only a Major due to being an Alchemist.

I always assumed that state alchemists were higher ranked (or more valued) than the non-alchemists. They are at least much more respected. But hey, wouldn't you "sir" and "ma'am" somebody if they had freaky powers and you didn't?
