He's not having serious surgery- it's a relatively quick procedure but I know he'll be scared to be at the hospital and possibly seperated from us.

If this is being done at a children's' hospital, then you really have no need to worry about this part of things. They will go through everything ahead of time with him and with the both of you. The only thing that you really need to be doing just now to prepare him is to remind him that doctors and nurses are helpers.

Even if this isn't being done in a pediatric hospital, it will be done by a pediatric surgeon and the ped's staff, and they will do the same things to prepare him.

One more thing. The more that you worry about it, the more he will pick up on that fact and the worse you will make it for him.

Call the hospital. Most children's hospitals have tours for kids that are having surgery. They show them everything from the waiting room where they get into special pj's to the face mask and what its like to "go to sleep". They meet the RN's that will be taking care of them and what will happen and how they will feel when they get up. My oldest got her tonsils & adnoids taken out when she was in 1st grade and the staff at Children's Hospital were great in preparing her.

The hardest part is managing your own fears. I had to make sure I stayed calm and confidant and not clingly with her that day. Your attitude will play an important part on how your son does as well. As long as your cool he will be too. Don't assume he will be scared and talk to him as if you expect him to be. Address it like a really cool adventure....Good luck & best wishes!!

Tell him they will put him on a table in a cold room and give him some funny smelling stuff to breathe. After that, he won't remember anything until he wakes up and sees you again. You can let him take a special blanket or stuffed animal with him if that will make it better. You could make a game of it by asking him to find out everyone's name and what color hair they have. He probably won't remember any of it, but it may keep him distracted enough that he won't remember to be scared.

Good luck!
