Koi are a particularly 'dirty' fish and love to stir up the the bottom of their pond. The trick is to have very good filtration. I was advised by an expert that you need extra filtration (perhaps an extra 25%) for Koi compared to ordinary goldfish. You shouldn't be changing your water although the pond should be cleaned out perhaps once a year if its the small domestic variety.
