I think the Habs made out better on this deal. They obtain a player in Gorges that hasn't yet reached his full potential and they get a 1st round pick this summer.
They lose Rivet, but with a Blue-Line like theirs, they don't have to be too worried. They still have Souray, Markov, Streit, Komisarek, Bouillion, and Niinima. Thats an All-Star defensive cast.

I live in Toronto, and my friend is a hard-core Montreal Canadiens fan. (which is a tad awkward)
Yesterday when the Canadiens made that deal, he was quoted as saying "Damn, i guess that means they are sellers".
At first, i felt bad for him and was in agree-al. But after thinking about it for a little bit i am not sure that this is the case.
First of all, let me point out that the Habs got a TREMENDOUS deal. Rivet is solid, but Gorges and a first is massive, for a player of his age and skill level and his contract status.
Also, I want to point out that Rivet has recently been in head coach Guy Carbaneu's dog house, and the other day their were rumours that the two got into a relatively bad altercation or at least disagreement on a few matters.
With that said, i am starting to think this deal may have two purposes.
One to clear cap space (but perhaps not for next offseason), perhaps montreal are buyers afterall and they needed to unload rivet in order to get a high priced forward (like a Billy Guerin), and two i just think this deal might have been too good to pass up on.

Sharks were in need of a veteran Dman... definitely Gorges has a bright future, right now he is struggling. I was actually expecting Niemenen to be traded cause he seems to be in Ron Wilson's doghouse getting scratched more often than not. With Kyle MacLaren's injury problems, the lack of experience on D cost us a few games. Rivet may also be there for insurance in case Kyle or Hannan should go down with an injury.

Its a great deal for the Canadiens as they got talent and futures. Rivet was a UFA at the end of the season - and look what happened to the Canucks after they didnt trade Jovanovski last season. He signed with the Coyotes and they got nothing for him, so lesson learned for GMs around the league.
The Sharks shore up their already impressive defensive unit, and maybe slow down some of the goals that have been filling their net lately.

Both sides win this one. SJ gets a veteran Dman and the HAbs get futures and cap room. Me thinks the Habs are looking for some up front scoring help and this move should give them the cap room to do that.

It was just a matter of time before he left anyway. He obviously wasn't happy with management and management rather get something in return than lose him to UFA on July 1st. In all good move by the Habs all because they land a 1st round pick this year and they've been doing well with those.

Something I have also heard is that they may be creating salary cap room to the tune of 2 million dollars as oopsed to the 420 thousand that gorges gets paid. The reason why? so they can have room for a big player that gets dealt to them by tuesday.
However you look at it though, getting gorges and first rounder for a guy who makes a lot of money and doesnt produce, who will also be a Unrestricted Free Agent at the end of this year, is quite a steal on behalf of gainey.

My first reaction was, "They gave up a young player and a first for Rivet?????"
Is Craig Rivet really worth a 1st round pick? Is he really worth a 1st round pick and a player. Josh Gorges is probably worth a 2nd or 3rd round pick by himself (probably closer to a 3rd).
If you really look at it, Didn't Atlanta just give up something similiar to this to get a very good veteran power forward name Tkachuk? Tkachuk only cost a 1st, 2nd and 4th and a veteran minor leaguer.
I think this is a bad deal for the Sharks. The Canadiens robbed them blind.

The thought of Montreal hunting for a cup this tear is a joke they are a below average team with a pretty good chance of not even making the second season. The sharks are the ones cup hunting

I'm sorry, rulistening, did you really use the term 'all-star defensive cast' in reference to Montreal?
You are clearly a person of faith and loyalty. The Habs were sellers on this one and if they make the playoffs, they will need no less than the hand of God to get them to the 2nd round.
