I have a ten year old felony theft conviction. I am currently getting my masters in English and plan on getting a PHD in English also. But recently a friend of mine told me it would almost impossible for me to get a job teaching at high school or college with my background is this true should i try another proffession or is there hope for me to still pursue the career I love.

I think it depends a lot on what the felony was for. If it was violence-related, then you're going to have a lot of trouble, for sure, but if it was something else, then there might be possibilities still.

If your conviction is 10 years old, you might consider checking with an attorney to try to get the conviction expunged from your record.

In the field of Education, they do background checks. I don't know how thorough they are, but a felony conviction could show. Obviously, if you lie and say you've never been convicted, and they find out you were, that would be grounds for termination at any time during your employment.

Sounds like an attorney can possibly get it expunged, and also answer your question as to whether or not you have to put a "yes" in the conviction question on the application.

Ask a private school. As far as public schools go Michael Milkin got a job at UCLA after felony insider trading convictions.

Ouch. It will be difficult for you to get a job. the only way you are going to be able to is if your references are impeccable. Make sure with a current job you attend, are reliable, and work well. Hopefully someone will be willing to give you a shot but it will be an arduous process.
