Ok, my son is 11 in honor science. Some of you are getting way too specific for me to even understand.

mitosis is the cell division of body cells. it breaks apart into 2. it starts with 1 and end with 2 cells.
now in meiosis its the cell division of sex cells. it starts with 1 cell and divides into 4 daughter cells.
im in honors bio and im 14 hope this helps. just learned it weeks ago

Mitosis and Meiosis are two nuclear division mechanisms. Multicelled organisms grow by way of mitosis and cytoplasmic division of body cells, which are called somatic cells. They also repair tissues that way. If you nick yourself peeling a potato, mitotic cell divisions will replace the cells that the knife sliced away. By contrast, meiosis only occurs in germ cells, a cell lineage set aside for the formation of gametes (such as sperm and eggs) and sexual reproduction. Mitosis and Meiosis have a lot in common, but the end result is different.

Mitosis describes the process by which the nucleus of a cell divides to create two new nuclei, each containing an identical copy of DNA. (Cytokinesis describes the division of the rest of the cell.) Almost all of the DNA duplication in your body is carried out through mitosis. Meiosis is the process by which certain sex cells are created. If you're male, your body uses meiosis to create sperm cells; if you're female, it uses meiosis to create egg cells. Others cells in your body contain 46 chromosomes: 23 from your father and 23 from your mother. Your egg (or sperm) cells contain only half that number -- a total of 23 chromosomes. When an egg and sperm unite to make a fertilized egg, the chromosomes add up to equal 46.

Meiosis is the formation of gametes. Two cycles producing haploid sex cells. Mitosis is simple cell division, producing two, diploid daughter cells. Easy find on the web.

Meiosis is for making sex cells ("gametes" ... sperm or egg cells).

Mitosis is for making all other types of cells.

With meiosis you end up with half the number of chromosomes in each resulting sex cell. (This is because each sex cell will combine with one from the opposite sex during fertilization.)

With mitosis you end up with the full number of chromosomes in each cell. That's normal cell division.

Mitosis - Occurs in diploid cells. (anything but sex cells)

Meiosis - Occurs in haploid cells. (sperm, etc)
