So, no...they weren't a language of their own, just a way to write the language Egyptians spoke. Sort of like writing now...cursive is how we write our language...it isn't our language.

It was not a spoken language. Not like English or German, where the letter/symbols phoenetically sound out words. Hieroglyphs are pictoral characters that represent words. You cannot "speak" hieroglyphs, you can only interpret them. The Ancient Egyptian spoken language was separate from hieroglyphs. Of course, the hieroglyphs were interpreted into Egyptian, but they are also pretty much universal and can be easily "spoken" or translated into any language.

Egyptian hieroglyphs (Sometimes called Hieroglyphics) was a writing system used by the Ancient Egyptians, that contained a combination of logographic, alphabetic, and ideographic elements. Cartouches were also used by the Egyptians. The variety of brush-painted hieroglyphs used on papyrus and (sometimes) on wood for religious literature is known as cursive hieroglyphs; this should not be confused with hieratic. 3100 B.C - 400 A.D.

I suppose you could say that the glyphs are a caricaturization of the Egyptian language.
