The video cassette is based on a true incident. It's been promoted as being "based on a true incident."
The writer/ director was a native of Austin Texas.
Its said that he got the inspiration for the film when he spotted a display of chainsaws while in the hardware section of a crowded store. But when i first saw it back in the 70's? At the end of the movie it said this was based on a true events.

No. The "actual events" that the movie claims involved a man in Wisconsin who killed two women and made a mask out of their flesh. He didn't use a chainsaw, and obviously, it wasn't in Texas....up to you to decide if two people consitutes a massacre.
