Nicotene in the tobacco causes several chemicals to be released in the brain: acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and beta-endorphins. This is the stress relief you are referring to.

The act of smoking as well as the effects of nicotene usually lead to decreased appetite, which can help with weight loss.

The release of acetylcholine increases concentration and memory recall/input.
