Cross trainers aren't the worst type of shoes for all-surface play, but they aren't the best choice. Obviously sneakers designed specifically for tennis are the best option. However, you might consider basketball shoes...the use is similar, with movements both forward and backward, as well as lateral, and lots of starting and stopping. Cross-trainers tend to have tread similar to running shoes, being meant for forward-only motion.

Over the years I've had several pairs of tennis shoes and found those to be best, but I've also gone through several pairs of basketball shoes and found those to be adequate on hardcourt, har tru, and indoor surfaces.

Cross trainers are definitely not as good as tennis shoes but still you can play with them, on any surface. You just won't be getting as good of a grip if you have tennis shoes.

Fine if you're just a hobbyist. But if you're a serious tennis player then you should definitely wear tennis shoes.
