Yes, it can be tracked.

Every "Mobile Equipment" manufactured in this world have a unique number permanently Hard Coded onto it at the time of manufacturing. It is called IMEI number or "International Mobile Equipment Identity" number. Even if we change the SIM card, we can not change the IMEI of the phone. And when ever we call from our mobile, the IMEI number is sent from the Mobile handset to the Network Operator along with the other information like the number being called etc. And this IMEI is recorded at the Mobile operator’s switch or exchange as CDR or "Call Data Record". The IMEI should also be recorded in another equipment of the Operator called EIR or "Equipment Identity Register", but unfortunately except the government operators like BSNL, MTNL very few private operators in have EIR. Anyway, still they have the IMEI in their Switch or Billing server in CDR. So you can contact with telephone operators in your circle (hopefully the handset will be used in a area nearby from where it is stolen or lost), you can request them to search their database to find the IMEI number of your phone. Some may request you to produce a FIR copy before the give you the data. If you do not know the IMEI number of your phone, you may refer the purchase bill, or warranty card, it should be mentioned their.

their should be, but the phone companies benifit from their customers getting their phones stolen... they have to spend money to get more phones. its how the market works..... well sort of

when someone steals a phone, they usually sell it or put it on ebay... i was told this when i got my 200 dollar phone stolen last year... im never going to buy a good phone again.'

oh... and i read dannyrocks answer... you can try to sucker them into giving you a new phone by threatening to leave to another phone company, but that won't usually work... you basically can not get your phone back in any way shape or form.

also... sorry about your phone getting stolen... i felt the pain a year ago...

try this, if you can remember the serial no of your stolen phone (usually about 12-16 digits), call your service provide and tell them your phone got stolen and you want to disable the phone. given them your phone serial no. your stolen phone cant be use by the person who steal it but at the same time you cant get your phone back. this service is limited by certain service provider only
