True, people use guns to kill people. However most guns are manufactured to kill deer, elk, moose, buffalo, etc., certain types of birds, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon and other varmints and coyote.
Not to mention the fact that IT IS our given right to bear arms. At the time in history when this right was declared, American men, women and children wielded guns for hunting food for their families and protection against the British, Indians(although the Americans at that time were invading Indian land, don't get me started on that!) and others who threatened their land, animals and home. The above still applies to today (minus the British and Indians, of course!) and should. I believe owning guns is a freedom that, I hope, is never taken away. As for me and mine, we rest quite peacefully in knowing if our lives were to be threatened, we would have the just protection against intruders.
I do believe that A LOT of times guns are in the hands of the wrong people by legal and illegal means. I think that THIS issue needs further addressed, laws to obtain a firearm need to be tougher, because the simple fact is the government will never be able to claim and destroy all guns, for people can manufacture them in their own homes.
The realization is that people use guns to kill people, BUT they also use knives, axes, hammers and assorted tools, and even household items, such as forks, spoons, ice picks, poisons found in chemicals and plants and some people use cars (i.e. driving under the influence, speeding and being distracted). So what are we to do, stop driving cars, buying utensils, tools, cleaners and plants? Are tool companies/ home improvement stores to issue wait periods for tool sales? How about needing a permit to buy houseplants? If car dealers were to check driving records before selling a vehicle, they probably wouldn't sell too many!
Come on, there are just some things that cannot be controlled, nor does the American public want them to be and that is what's great about living in a free society.
I think our courts have failed us more than anything, if they were to execute killers instead of trying to "fix" them with a slap on the wrist, I believe we would have a lot less crime in our country.
Recently a 3 year old autistic child was murdered by his foster parents, they did not use a gun, they used a blanket, duct tape and playpen as their' weapons. The foster mother was held accountable last week at trial, the sentence?...... She will be 84 years old (she's 30 now) before she will be eligible for parole! Which is great to a point, but our tax money is paying for her to eat, sleep, breathe and possibly gain a college education. My question is, what about the child whose freedoms were abruptly taken away from him? In my opinion, she should pay the same price the poor child paid, no one that takes away anothers' life should have any rights. As harsh as it may sound, an eye for an eye applies here, or as it were, a life for a life. .

Owning and correctly using firearms is a way to protect yourself, your family and your property. Firearms were designed to aid in self preservation.
I once saw a t-shirt that stated "If guns kill people, then pencils miss spel words, cars make people drive drunk, and spoons make Rosie O'Donnell fat." That statement makes alot of sense.
Guns don't kill people, people kill people.
If there were no guns, then people would find other ways to do the job...

you have the right to own a gun because if the government ever steps out of line you have the right to over throw it. with out guns you would not be able to do that.
you can vote all you want. when a government wants to use its army to take over w/o guns you can do nothing. unless the army is from canada! jk

The right to bear arms is the first thing a government takes away from people when they are trying to take over a country. Then no one can do anything. Thomas Jefferson one of our countries greatest Presidents said that the right to bear arms was important to keep our government honest.

Simply put, an armed populace keeps the government in check. It's much harder to be authoritarian when everyone can defend themselves....

The guns are supposed to allow the people to protect themselves from government tyranny.
It's the final check against government abuse of power.
Britain only allowed you to have a vote because they got their *** kicked by us and our guns. They didn't want to go through that again.
