Sam Bowie & Michael Jordan is considered the classic example (especially considering that Charles Barkley went 5th as well) but Sam Bowie's poor performance in the NBA was more due to injuries than lack of talent.
Portland made the pick because they needed a Center, Michael Jordan averaged less than 20 points per game in college and they already had (hall of famer & 50 greatest player) Clyde Drexler as their SG.
I think you will find that nearly every year there are really bad draft picks where there are no excuses.
This includes bad players going with high picks and excellent players going with low picks. It just goes to show how hard it is to know how a player is going to turn out.
Some examples are:
2001 Kwame Brown went first, Tony Parker went 28th, Gilbert Arenas went 31st and Mehmet Okur went 38th.
1998 Michael Olowokandi went first while Dirk Nowitzki went 9th.
1995 Joe Smith went first while Kevin Garnett went 5th.

I agree with the Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan pick, but at least Bowie was productive. The absolute worst pick in the draft has got to be a tossup between Disognia Diop or Joseph Forte. Where in the hell are these guys?

when darko was drafted over three all-stars wade, anthony, and bosh, since he never even played big minutes for the pissedons and he was later traded to the magic for practically nothing. This is the worst draft pick because darko wasn't a late draft pick like diop but got picked second and also was much less productive than bowie.

As a Warrior fan it is Joe "incredibly Cares" Barry Carroll because of the fact he could have made the squaddies opposition for years yet to come again and did not. the 1st ordinary determination of the 1980 draft. He left to play in Europe after 2 terrific seasons interior the NBA. If he cared in any respect he would have been Kareem or Russell. Plus, the squaddies traded for the 1st ordinary p.c.. with Robert Parrish and the p.c.. used to opt for Kevin McHale. in actuality it is Nikoloz Tskitishvili, the Nugget's 5th ordinary determination in 2002. even with enjoying in 80 one video games his rookie season (sixteen starts), the only good subject that must be stated approximately him replace into that he shot properly from the loose throw line for a 7 footer.Tskitishvili averaged 3.9 factors, 2.2 rebounds, and a million.a million assists on a shooting proportion under .3 hundred his rookie season and by no skill exceeded his numbers. In 3 extra seasons interior the NBA, he ended up enjoying in in basic terms ninety one extra video games, averaging under 2 factors, 2 rebounds and a million help on a shooting proportion that hovered on the .3 hundred mark.

#2 Sam Bowie over #3 Michael Jordan. The #1 draft pick of that year, Hakeem Olajuwon, as well as Jordan, both brought championships to their teams, but Sam Bowie is remembered only because he was a dud. That's gotta hurt.

Len Bias because he never ended up playing. Admittedly, the 1986 draft was a very weak class, with very few allstars, but Scott Skiles, Mark Price, Dennis Rodman, and Jeff Hornacek were still on the board.

sam bowie over micahel jordan. hands down. bowie was never even been a contributor...
for those who think darko is the worst pick: darko was picked on an already good team, with a very solid frontline with big ben and cliff robinson (i think, m not sure on this.) and with sheed coming in mid way in the season.. there is no way he could really play.. especially with the type of play(and preference not to play rookies if i may add) implemented by brown.. darko is STARTING to flourish alongside howard.. technically, it is his first full season.. 8 pppg, 5.5 rpg and 1.1 apg aint so bad..

In 1972 the blazers used the 1st pick on LaRue Martin out of Loyola (IL.). They passed on 2 hall of famers -- Bob McAdoo was the 2nd pick and Julius (Dr. J) Erving who was the 12th pick (who opted to go to the ABA instead)
