And now I've got a swollen, red thumb. and the curve of my hand is swollen as well.
Went to the ER room (because it bled like crazy and I got a bit dizzy from it) and they gave me doxycycline and said to take a bit of tylenol.
My question is: Has anyone ever dealt with this? About how long will it be until my thumb is back to 'normal'? It's sore, swollen and...just... =(
Note: Yes,I know. I should've been more careful with the mouse. I cornered him to try to scoop him up (he's the only male that's terrified of being handled) and he just dove on me and gnawed the unholiness out of my hand. I sincerely doubt he's 'rabid' or some such. I've had him a month on the 7th of March,he's a pet and he's kept in an animal-proof enclosure (IE: They can't get out and nothing can get in) that's 100% disease free. He also looks to be exceptionally healthy, eats and drinks normally, etc, etc.

You do not have to worry about diseases, captive bred mice are not disease riddle by any means. I have worked in a pet store and have been bit by several rodents (usually hamsters, but the occasional mouse too). I am assuming he bit you on the tip of your thumb and that is why it bled so much. It will be sore for a week or so? but I never have gone to the ER, so yours may be worse?
Make sure with future handling you wash your hands before so you don't smell like food or sweet smelling lotions, perfumes or soap. Then always make sure they are awake before you try to pick them up. Also make sure he is getting enough food he might be the sub-ordinate male in your tank and is constantly picked on and driven away from food. So he may be super defensive and hungry. You may end up having to separate him if this is the case.
Good luck! Hope your thumb feels better soon

Surprisingly most domesticated/fancy rodents are cleaner than people...so if you call them disease ridden just imagine what WE are!
In regards to the bite wound...the way mices teeth are shaped rather than an actual bite you probably have more of a puncture type of injury. Puncture are actually more invasive and can do more tissue damage that just a regular bite. Do what your Dr. said take the meds, doxycycline is an antibiotic and is in the same family as tetracycline, and Tylenol for pain. I would also add some ice to help with swelling and pain (5-10mins on 15-30 mins off, repeat) and also if you keep your hand above the level of your heart it will also help with the swelling.

Oh man. I work with mice and I think I get bit on a daily basis. Some of them just chomp on you and won't stop. I feel your pain. You will be fine. You should start to feel better in a few days if you do what the doctor said. Just keep the area clean...wash your hands frequently. Rat bites take about a week or two for the pain and swelling to go away, so be glad it wasn't a pet rat. : )

put a couple of drops of bleach in a sink full of water and it will help remove whatever is causing your hand to swell. after you do that it should only be a couple of days until it's back to normal. i'd advise that you don't corner him again without a treat in your hand. let him come to the treat and then pick him up once he starts to eat it. i had a male like that to. i got him from someone that was going to use him as snake food. it may take a while but if you keep at it he may even wind up like my little guy and being a pocket mouse.

on a similar time as I take excitement in which you have the adulthood to examine till now getting an animal, yet as others have stated, your particularly protecting tone is extra advantageous than somewhat infantile. It fairly looks such as you have your arms finished with various animals already. What are you going to do along with your rat if it bites you out of worry once you first get it--- banish it to an entire life in this is cage? provide it on your brother? i'm no longer attempting to be impolite, yet i think of that the dedication to deliver an animal into your existence is a huge one, and in case you get disappointed over human beings attempting to tell you that your comments are incorrect...fantastically while they gain this in a mature manor, then possibly you may desire to objective to enhance up somewhat till now bringing extra animals into your existence. In my experience, getting an analogous-intercourse pair of rats is plenty extra basic than getting a single rat. once you have a solo rat, for whichever reason, you may desire to spend a number of hours with it each and daily, on a similar time as in case you get a pair, they gained't be thoroughly depressing in case you get fairly busy for some days, and could't commit the time to it. hazard is that no count how plenty loose time you have, you will no longer have adequate to totally fulfill the social needs of a lone rat (whether you are able to spend 8 hours an afternoon with the rat... he will nonetheless take a seat in his cage, bored and on my own for sixteen hours of the day). the different posters have given many different the explanation why protecting a lone rat is a foul concept. Secondly, a 24x12x12 cage isn't possibly great adequate, even for a single rat. maximum totally grown rats are approximately 12' long. Your rat could do plenty extra suited in a cage that became into alongside the traces of 24x24x12,

I got my daughter 2 mice and the female bit me then bit the crud out of her finger. It bled for 1/2 hour then finally stopped. We both cleaned our bites and sanitized them also. My daughters was worse and she had a numb senation for a few days, but no swelling. Mine was fine. We think the female is pregnant and that's why she bit. Give him more time to get used to you. Try using a treat as an offering to get him used to you. We've only had our a few weeks and are still getting used to them and them us.

You said, "He's the only male that's terrified of being handled." Are they kept together or apart? Males often fight, sooner or later...sometimes to the death. It could be he's stressed being with the others or (if kept apart) he probably smelled another male on your hand. I've had one really bad bite, it took about a week to feel better. Good luck!
