Many birds have gorgeous coloration while fur bearing creatures are dull.
Why are there no brilliant blue/green/red mammals?

Please, won't somebody explain this? Is it something to do with the structure of hair vs feathers?

Male birds have bright plumage to attract the attention of predators away from the dull colored females, so that the females (and the nests they are sitting on) are less likely targets.

Fur is intended to hide all of the animals, male and female, either from predators (zebras hiding in grass from lions) or so that they can sneak up on prey (lions hiding in the tall grass).

I don't mean to be rude, but have you ever seen a tiger? They are a color that can only be described as bright and beautiful. Male birds need the bright color to attract mates. Fur bearing animals need to keep from being eaten. They also need to be camouflaged to catch food.

Whoa - I have never noticed that! You are absolutely right! Maybe it's because birds live up high, where there are more kites that they have to blend in with.
