When Kerala celebrates Vishu, Assam celebrates Bihu. When Andhra+Karnataka celebrate new year Yugadi, UP, MP and Maharashtra celebrate new year Sankranti. When a priest from Varanasi origin is performing puja in Rameshwaram, a Nambudiri priest is performing puja in Badrinath. People have similar pain and similar happiness. I have travelled every corner of India and Nepal. Nepalese think that I am one of them while Tamil think that I am one of them. My experience is that the Indian thread of unity is very strong. Much stronger than seen in some countries that have one common religion or one common language.

I think it is a sign of a good democracy. People live in a kind of government where the village, city, province, nation respects the local culture. It is not like a central government having too much power over everything or demanding that everyone speak the same language (Like English in the U.S.).

Muslim / Hindu tensions have gotten some news lately, but it seems like it's mostly the work of outsiders (Pakistani extremists) who start these conflicts.

I don't know if those Bollywood movies represent everyone in India, but the people have a way of living with suffering and joy
with the same sense of unity and community support. The culture of India is beautiful and diverse like a silk scarf.

The reality is that Indian people, whether Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, or Muslim, they all have a passion for life. And when you have a passion for life, money things don't matter most.

Those who have a passion for life don't take other lives.

You gave examples of diversity in the country. Now let me explain about unity...

1> Kargil war: The whole country stood up toigether to salute those soldiers and boosted their morales.

2> Bhuj Earthquake: The whole country agian stood up together and contributed in sending aids to the unknown vicitms out there.

3> Mumbai floods: People in mumbai themselves managed to come out of the disaster with their own unified efforts.

4> Tsunami: Unified efforts of sending the aids again.

5> Gujarat and Maharashtra floods: These floods caused a great havoc and gave rise to few dedadly diseases. here again the Indians made efforts in sending some help from their side. No matter how small the halp was, and within few weeks after the floods, the region weas normal.

6> Abovce all, the Mumbai bomb blasts: The mumbaites again showed there courage and unitedly struggled to bring back life to normal. The people out there didn't run to there homes after the balsts but instead ran out of there houses to help those injured in the blasts. the whole country saluted mumbai for its brave stand.

These were just parts of major highlights brought into picture by media. If you really keep your eyes open, you would find the process of unification still being carried out by Indians. We celebrate fastivals of all religions. We enjoy the different Indian cuisines, don't we? Altough the dress code is different, we accept each individual with it. The rituals and customs may be different, but we are more interested in learning them. Unification is not just a physical process, but it's the unconcious effort that every Indian puts in. These diversities, infact help us get closer.

As you compared our country with USA, which has common standards, I need to tell you that It's too is diversified. There are a huge number of Indians, Chinese communites Japanese over there. When they can accept these foreign communities, why do we wanna hesitate to accept our own heritage.

Another thing about common standards, do you know that different states in the USA follow different laws. Although there dress codes, and food are standardized, but the laws and ethics are not. While here in India, where ever you go, you will find a common ethical code. Doesn't that really matter to you, or is it taht you really don't know anything about this fact?

:-)

nowadays it is becoming an Illusion. As long as the people in power look only for their personal gains and not work for the country and the people, it will be an Illusion.

People are always united, not matter what the religion or caste or creed, its is only the ones at the top who spoil the whole set up.

But if you actually want to see Unity in Diversity then you should see India when they win a big Cricket tournament. No matter which part of India you are from you are United.

Illusion... They have a very strict CASTE SYSTEM which is far worse than people in the US dressing similarly.... You cannot marry or obtain employment outside of your caste, or else face cultural ostracization.
