I am interested in such a future after I graduate from college, but to give myself a feel for it before hand, I'm interested in exposing myself to it. How can I best do this? I've considered meeting with my mayor and asking her if I could be an assistant of hers (I guess kind of like an informal intern). If not her, then perhaps a council member. Either way, I want to get exposed. How would you recommend I do this and what is your advice? Thank you.

Having worked for a city, I'm going to give you some different advice.....start at the bottom of the heirarchy and ask to speak to your city's union president. You will get a good idea of how the underlying structure works, which will be invaluable if you are set on being a city official someday. Don't ever forget the labor employees, without them you will have no one to manage.

Volunteering is a good place to start. Check with City Hall and see what type of programs are available and which ones might interest you. Also, you might want to check into attending city council meetings. These are usually open to the public. You local city council representative might be able to help you out too. The biggest thing is to get out there and meet with your local politicians and make a contact base. From there, you can learn ways to direct your interests. Good luck, maybe you'll be president some day.

Volunteering is a great way to start. The public library should have a list of programs with the city that you can get involved in. Or even on their web sites they have listings of different organizations that they may need assistance with or who are looking for volunteers. That's a great way to start. If you know anyone who is already on the city council, you can ask them if you could volutneer some time to help them.

Volunteer to help the Mayor campaign. Also your local representatives will allow students to help them as well. Write a letter to your local congressman and they will most likely respond.

Good luck.

Check with the party's headquarters in your city that you are interested with and be a volunteer. They have plenty of things to do.
