I've been told that NYC housing is more expensive and that there are actually some very affordable places to be purchased in Hawaii, however, the cost for goods in Hawaii is significantly (4x+) more than mainland US due to the remote nature of Hawaii.

I have been to both and found that to live in New York City proper, it is much more expensive than Hawaii. Although there are some surcharges that you have pay for products that are shipped into Hawaii since it is not on the mainland, housing is more affordable in Hawaii than New York City any day. Depending upon your likes and dislikes and needs; your money can go farther in Hawaii, if you can budget well.

I believe it would be Hawaii because first of all, it is an island so imports would have to be shipped in. Hawaii doesn't have easy access to many resources we have in the United States. Not only that, it is known as a tourist state and everything is very pricey. I was there two years ago and a Big Mac from McDonalds was 5 bucks! And I'm not talking about the meal. You only get the Big Mac.

I think NYC than San Fran and than Hawaii.
There are some "cost of living" web sites to help you compare basic living costs (with or without cost of buying a house).
