Can it be anyone? Absolutely anyone? Then I choose Saladin/Salahudin, from...um, well, the Crusade-ish time. He fought against Richard the Lionheart, but they both respected each other. If memory serves, he was leader of the Ottomans. He was well-known for both his military skill and his mercy, and his people loved him. I enjoy the stories about him, like when he sent his own physician to tend to King Richard when he heard he was ill...

George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt to name three in the U.S. A great leader is someone who can inspire people to solve a great task. All three did just that, FDR twice (Great Depression, WWII). Other countries great leaders include Churchill. On the negative side you have such as Mao. You need not be a good person to be a great leader.

Queen Elizabeth 1 and second the first built her country to be an Empire and reigned supreme for 60yrs and the present Queen has lived through an abdication, a world war,numerous terrorists attacks against her country and has seen ten Prime Ministers come and go has seen her family make a mockery of royalty and all the time with grace,strength and charm.Long live the Queen.
