A self-propelled mower, properly shopped for is far superior to a push mower in all but the smallest yards.

A hilly uneven terrain calls for a rear whell driven mower to provide the traction. A good one with a 6.5 briggs and stratton or a 5.5 Honda will cost you between $250 and $350 dollars

If you have a flatter lawn, especially one with many obstacles, a more maunverable front wheel driven one is in order. They run from $200-$300.

The advantages of a powered mower is extremely less cutting time, less energy used, and more importantly a more well-groomed and even yard.

Self propelled is the only way to go. The one major drawback is when wanting to pull the unit backwards. Some SP units need to go forward a little more to disengage the drive before you pull back.

There are decisions to make among SP units. Front or rear wheel drive. There is also a variable speed drive too. Front wheel drives are less expensive, but when you lift the front wheels you have no power. Most rear wheel drives come with a variable drive system. This can be a lever that you pull tighter to go faster , to Toro's Personal Pace system. The Personal Pace works by pushing the handle in farther to make the mower move faster. The nice thing is the mower will not go faster then you can walk, so no risk of the mower dragging you along. Lawn-Boy also has a system that works like it. Toro owns Lawn-boy, and you can see these at your local dealer, or at Home Depot, or www.toro.com. My recommendation is the Toro model 20017 Recycler w/ Personal Pace. It usually sells for around $360. An electric start model is priced at about $400.

Hope this helps.

get a small 18 or 20 inch backyard mower a lot less frills the further appropriate an entire mulcher mower type is the only to pass for next acceptable a application mower that has an aspect flap. make positive it has a briggs and stratton motor on as they have proved themselves and spares everywhere. Cant propose which sort take a go searching and observe whats getting used in case you've been in Australia New Zealand or the U.ok. i'd say mulching mower look at a masport.

I used to have a great push lawnmower Murray w/ a Briggs and Straton Engine. It was great, could go over really high grass w/ no problem. But as it drowned in a flood...

I got a cheap 4.5 hp mower from HD to replace it. It was awful. I'd get bruises all over my legs from shoving it. Maybe a 6 hp would have been better.

So then I got a reconditioned self propelled Honda (originally $399, I got it for about $159.)It is great, but does not go over high grass like my old one could. You have to keep the grass cut more regularly. It is also very fast, which means almost running after it to cut the grass! I think your yard also has to be pretty smooth to use the self propelled, not a lot of uneven areas. It is also really easy to change the height of the blade.

SP is great all you really do is just walk behind the mower you don't really have push them plus they help when you have to mow up hill even down hill it holds back a little bit so it doesn't get away from you regular push mowers you have to PUSH them all the time up hill down hill you have hold them back etc SP will cost a little more but well worth it
