I think such people have different purposes regarding reading, some read to learn something more, some read because they are required to do so as part of their studies and, surprisingly, some forget how to read for sheer enjoyment. Indeed, most books we can buy or borrow from libraries are meant for avid readers. I suspect the language syllabus at school/university might have focused too much on factual understanding or critical analysis, that is, with less emphasis on reading for literary pleasure.

I guess that takes in all the reasons. I for the pleasure, and for learning, I haven't had to read one for many, many years.

I often read when I'm upset, it helps to calm me down. I read aloud to my sisters to (hopefully) instill a love of reading...don't think it's working though...And I might read something if it'll make a friend stop hounding me to read it =)

to read to someone else, say, for example, your children
you could simplify it to just two reasons: because they want to and because they have to
