You just have to be very choosy. I prefer independent films, foreign films, documentaries. I hate most blockbuster American films.

You have to realize there are a LOT of movies that are made and not just by Hollywood. Check out foreign, independent and art house films.

George Lucas said it wisely.."To make money Hollywood has to make crap films that will attract an audience and bring in money so that Hollywood can create the good films that don't bring in the big bucks without going out of business."

I might go to 2 movies a year, and that's only after I've checked out a lot of reviews.
The problem with movies, I think, is volume. So many movies are coming out and maybe 10% of them are good.

yes, people are running out of ideas and titles ("the pursuit of happyness"? hollywood even spelled it wrong.), at least in mainstream movie making anyway.
the new "horror" movies aren't even scary anymore...it seems that the directors just want to gross out their patrons instead of enthralling them in suspense or deep plot structure. saw and texas chainsaw massacre really dissapointed me.

however, i have noticed a rise in popularity of independent films lately. there are some really great recent titles in the independent spectrum like little miss sunshine, the science of sleep, lost in translation, pan's labrynth, etc.

most of them are mediocure at best. they can never seem to find a good balence of effects, art, charecter development, story, plot development, and all that other stuff, plus they relay too much on CGI.CGI is fine if you use it when needed and not as a gimmic or distraction for lack of real story.
