It has started heating when I drive on the roads constantly braking but not at all when I drive up and down on a freeway. I recently had the water pump replaced, and see the coolant level at about half the coolant tank so want to add some additional coolant myself.

Hes asking what type or coolants... not what can be the problem. Problem wise, its nearly useless to ask ppl online for info by the info he can supply.
Coolant, any type will work. Why? because in Hot climate area such as LA or HongKong in Asia, people can just use plain water as coolant. Why not in US is because it might freeze up during the winter. So basically, any type of coolant can be added to the radiator, just like windshield washer fluid, is there a particular brand for certain cars??

theres only 2 kinds, the yellow kind, or the orange dex-cool, the mix is 50/50 but check your owners manual for the right type of coolant. or buy the coolant that is safe for all makes and all models no matter what the color of the coolant is. personally i dont trust that stuff, but its up to you. also, check your thermostat, it could have failed in the closed position. good luck

Well, my husband toaght me that no brand is better then another, but in this season do 50/50 coolant and water but don't put to much of another or it might cause to possibly over heat.

this sounds like your electric fan is not working. in stop and go the fan is on to cool the engine. when driving at highway speeds the speed of the car pushes air through the radiator so the fan is not needed.

open the hood, run the engine at idle until it heats up and see if the fan comes on, if it does great, if it doesn't then it could be the thermostatic switch, the fan itself or both
