Most definitely AGREE. Emerson could not have put it better. It is not a bad thing to be misunderstood by society and in many cases it means that whatever you are being misunderstood for is a unique and done without influence. You can achieve true self identity only by breaking away from society and developing your own beliefs, no matter who understands them. Great minds are not influenced by those around them.

I disagree, Because i feel that we have grown as humans over the years and in this time and era we stand up and question things more readily.
So people must understand in some respects to continue on, sure some might not agree and some might. its part and parcel of having so many free thinkers in the world today.

I agree. There are many cases where great geniuses were misunderstood, ridiculed & rejected in their own time & only appreciated later. They were ahead of their time. Inventors, scientists, artists, humanitarians. Anyone who dares to rebel against the norm & make a difference, anyone who stands out rather than fits in is bound to be misunderstood.

Sure, I agree to some extent. If you are great then the majority (who are of small thoughts) cannot accept your idea or your action, because it is too big for them. So they will fight against you. Some of them may feel you disturb their status quo, so they will start to tell bad things about you.

that is a paradox if I've ever heard one. How can you be called great if no one thinks your great? Greatness is measured by humanity, not self-perspective. Disagree

I disagree. You can be great at a lot of things. Things even kids can grasp and use, being great at your chosen profession, etc.
Sometimes the simplest things can be considered great.
