When I put my computer on standby, it switches off like normal, and then when I switch it back on it asks for my password and starts immediately.
Is it safe to leave my computer on standby for long periods at a time or is it better to switch it off fully?

Thanks for help.

It's safe and can be left on standby for as long as you need it to be.

I think you have two items mixed up.

Standby v/s Hibernate

When you put a computer on standby, it goes into a sleep mode, but the power never goes off. The monitor usually goes to a blank state, the hard drive power switches off, but all case fans and CPU remain active.

In hibernate mode, the computer switches off fully and you must turn it back on. It writes a quick start directory to the hard drive for a fast restart to bring the computer back to exactly where you left off. For example, if you put your computer in the hibernate mode while working in a program, when you restart it will return to that same program and with all work done still there, nothing is lost.

Standby = move the mouse or touch a keyboard key, computer wakes up.

Hibernate = computer fully shuts off, but returns to the exact spot you were before hibernation. Mouse and keyboard will not restart it, unless that option is enabled within the BIOS for normal startup mode.

Note that Standby is a low power mode and a notebook computer left on Standby will generate heat in it's storage case. Hibernation mode will still save all your settings and program information while shutting the power completely off.

It's perfectly safe to leave on standby, but, if you're going to be away from your computer for more than three or four hours, it's better to turn it off. It will save electricity.

My laptop has been on 24/7 when you consider that October, 2006. This one, a pc has been on 24/7 for slightly below a twelve months. the two are Core2 Duos working at a hundred% CPU utilization on initiatives for humanity on the international community Grid (initiatives like Nutritious Rice for the international, help triumph over maximum cancers, AfricanClimate@homestead, gaining awareness of Dengue drugs – collectively, Human Proteome Folding - section 2, FightAIDS@homestead, help treatment Muscular Dystrophy, Genome assessment, help Defeat maximum cancers, and Human Proteome Folding).

youre paying the bills... and doing your bit towards global warming. leave your PC on by all means, none of us like to wait 45 seconds before we can look at our e-mails...

but set your monitor to go off... not on standby, it uses as much power on standby as it would if it were on. (CRT not TFT) the tube heaters are on all teh time...

and if its on all teh time it will collect more dust faster.. mines on around 18hours a day, i have to hoover the motherboard and fans every other month... we have 4 dogs and 6 cats... and the dust gets impacted on teh processor...

I think if you are going to be away from the computer for a while, you should shut it down. If it is just a few hours, it would be safe to put in on stand by.
