The Lord of the Rings was written as a Sequel to two other books: The Silmarillion and The Hobbit. The Silmarillion is a complete backstory from the creation of Middle Earth through up until around the creation of the ring. The Hobbit picks up sometime later and takes place only 60 years before the Fellowship of the Ring. It follows the story of Bilbo, Frodo's uncle and his journey where he discovers the ring.

I reccommend both books highly!

Read: "The Hobbit" written by JRR Tolkien as a prequel to the LoTR
Read: Warrior of the Ring (written by the grandson of JRR Tolkien) to know how the ring was made, the war before, Aragorn's grandfather, and other stories related to the pre LoTR.

To answer your question: because there are books before the "lord of the rings"
