The dog is the companion of King Pelanor who is in Camelot in search of the "Questing Beast" A creature only he can see.
Funny story time: Years ago I did Camelot on stage. Our Pelanor was a retired High School History Prof. or something, anyway he was about 90 years old and weighed about 85lbs. The Sheepdog was named "Horrid" and outweighed the Prof by a LOT. Through all the rehearsals, the dog was perfect. On Time, sober and well behaved (More than some of the cast) Opening night, the dog went CRAZY. Barking at the audience, knocking over scenery, peeing on the stage and at one point running across stage, dragging a desperate Pelanor behind him. The reviews the next day were two column inches about the play and ten inches about the dog. By noon we had sold out TWO extensions. After that the dog was perfect again. Everyone came to see the crazy dog but he was wonderful. Some people called it opening night jitters, I still maintain he did it to help our box-office.

There is an old story about Shakespear which goes to the effect that He was once asked to include a dog in one of His plays because a Patron liked Them. This could be where the confusion lies.
What sort of Dog is it? A big Irish Wolf hound?
