Lots of things to see in Lima and surrounding areas.
Downtown is probably the place to start. The cathedral and churches in the main square are a "must see". The change of the palace guards is every day at midday. Visit also the old Osambela house. For lunch, if you are still downtown, try the T'anta at Paseo de los Escribanos (Behind the municipalidad).
Good idea to visit the Museo de Oro and Pachacamac.
Best restaurant for local food would be "Jose Antono" (one in the San Isidro district and another in the Chacarilla district).

I try to avoid Lima in favor of more rural areas in Peru; the Amazon, Andes, etc., but if you must be in Lima, it is best known for museums. The Museo de la Nacion is the best, also the Gold Museum is good. My personal favorites are a couple of the smaller collections--the Museum of the Peruvian Inquisition has a lot of torture devices used to introduce the natives to Christianity and there is a wing of the Larco Herrera Museum that has an amazing variety of pornographic ceramics. Usually there's a curator greeting you who advises against laughing.

Lima is a very cultural city. Downtown Lima is one of the most beautiful cities in America. Go to the cathedral, walk around and go to San Francisco Convent, San Pablo church, San Martin Sq. Plaza Mayor. Art Museun, Italian Museum. You can visit some piramids from ancient cultures in the middle of the city, with buildings sorrounding. Try Huaca Pucllana and Huaca yanamarca.

1 US dollar is aprox. 3.20 Nuevos soles
US$1 = S/. 3.20 (aprox.)

Even so, staying in Lima is very cheap if you visit from the US.

Taxi: between US$1 up to US$5, for a very long route.

Food: average, less than $10 per party. You pay aprox. US$15 in a fancy restaurant.

Etc, etc.
