a t=0 mins, the cruise ship had a velocity of +447 cm/s and was at x=513 km. the ship then acce;erated at a constant rate of 10 cm/s^2. find the distance the cruise ship traveled in 2 mins.

s = ut + 1/2(a)t^2

s = displacement
u = initial velocity
t = time
a = acceleration

I don't think 513km really matters because you're only trying to figure out how far the ship goes. Let's solve for s...

s = (.447m/s)(120secs) + (1/2)(.10m/s^2)(120^2sec)
s= 773.64m

I think this answer makes sense because if the ship was not accelerating and just moving at .447m/s, in 120seconds it would travel (.447)(120) or 536.4meters. However, since it is accelerating, it makes sense that the ship would travel farther.

unstated assumptions
all the accelerations, speeds and distances are measured consistently in a single direction.

2 minutes is 120 seconds
if the ship had not accelerated then the ship would have traveled
120seconds*447cm/s=53640cm=.5364 kilometers
accelerating 10 cm/s^s for 120 seconds would add additional distance
1/2At^2
=1/2*10*120*120
=5*14400=72000cm=.72000kilometers
adding the two distances together
1.2564 kilometers or not quite a mile

Start with the formula:
distance=(initial velocity)x(time) + 0.5(acceleration)x(time)^2
so...

d=(447 cm/sec)(120 sec)+0.5(10 cm/sec^2)(120 sec)^2
d=125640 cm
There are 100000 cm in a kilometer so....
d=1.2564 km

The distance traveled in 2 minutes is 1.2564 km, and the total distance is...
1.2564 km+ 513 km = 514.2564 km
