I've heard some good things about the "Investing for Dummies" and "Stock Investing for Dummies" books. A friend of mine who has become quite good in stocks started with these and still refers to them at times. Do some reading and studying before you put your first dollar in the market.

Be very careful with some of the answers you get here. You don't know the qualifications or intent of the people answering.

You need to read several books on investing. They don't have to be technical. Just enough so you understand the important terms & understand important concepts like "Asset Allocation", "Time Horizon" and "Risk Tolerance".

Good luck!

ditto. Go to the public library and look through financial magazines like Smart Money, etc. They publish lists of mutual funds and how they've been performing and their fees and whatnot. They sometimes make recommendations, for what it's worth. If you're starting from scratch, that's where I'd start.

Invest in mutual funds instead of straight stocks. It's easier and less risky.
