Scarlett had two sisters & in order to make Ashley jealous when she found out he was going to marry his cousin Melanie, Scarlett married Melanie's brother Charles who was suppose to marry Ashley's sister India. Charles got killed.
Scarlett like most of the other southern plantation owners got poor from the war. The only money they had was in Confederate bonds which were worth zilch after during & after the war.
Scarlett went to Atlanta to visit Melanie after her husband Charles was killed. She wanted to be where Ashley would be when he came home. When Atlanta was evacuated, Scarlett took Melanie & the new baby to Tara. She was not homeless. When the carpetbeggers ran up the taxes on Tara, Scarlett went back to Atlanta to try to get the money from Rhett. When that did not work, she ran into Frank Kennedy who was suppose to be Scarlett's sister Sue Ellen's intended. Scarlett lied that Sue Ellen would be marrying someone else so she could get Frank to marry her so she could get the money to pay the taxes on Tara. So, she not only worked at Kennedy/Wilkes, she & her husband owned it.
Did Scarlett love Rhett? I think she did, but they were at odds all the time. He loved her, but acted like it was no big deal, which got her back up & then there was an argument, bla bla bla!!!
Ashley the wimp loved Melanie, but he probably loved Scarlett to. But Scarlett was just too much for him...She would have chewed him up & spit him out, like she did with husband Frank until he was killed.
Happy ending??? Didn't you see the end? Bonnie got killed when her pony threw her & broke her neck. Melanie died & Rhett walked out on Scarlett. Not quite a happy ending.
I have enjoyed watching Gone With The Wind
since I was a kid. My mom & her sisters grew up watching it also. Next time it's on, hope you can sit down & watch the whole thing so you can get the whole picture better than how I gave it to you.....

The war made Scarlett poor. She was visiting Atlanta and then returned to Tara when Sherman made his march to the sea. She couldn't go sooner because she had to stay with the pregnant Melanie. The Yankees used Tara as a headquarters. The book says this happened because her mother and sisters were sick. The Yankees took everything and most of the servants ran away. In addition they made the taxes $300, a high rate for the time. Hence why she visited Rhett in jail.
She did love Rhett. Unfortunately, she never knew it until after Melanie died and Rhett was leaving her.
The ending is neither happy nor sad in my opinion. Rhett leaves Scarlett, and she decides to go home to decide what to do next. You may feel happy because Scarlett is a spoiled brat who got what she deserved. You may feel sad because Scarlett and Rhett genuinely loved each other but ended up apart.
Ashley never loved Scarlett romantically. He says he loved some of her traits. At the end Scarlett finds out that Ashley really loved Melanie, and she wished he told her sooner instead of talking about honor.
Hope this helps!

Ok... first I would like to say, the book explains a lot more, but the movie is good too; here are your answers:
She ended up poor because the Union Army (the Yankees) took everything there was at Tara. The land became baron and the animals were gone. She had to start again and work the land herself.
In the end she realizes that she does love Rhett, but it is too late.
The ending isn't a happy one. She goes to Rhett to tell him she actually does love him, but he's fed up and this is where the line, "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn" comes from.
I don't think Ashley loved her. I think he led her on, but I don't think he loved her.

Scarlett wound up poor because the what the yankies didn't burn they stole from her. Yes she love Rhett dearly. Ashley Wilkes never loved Scarlett at all. The movie has a sad ending. If I tell you anymore it will spoil it for you. You should see all of it. You like it. Pop the corn & enjoy! Smiles

Scarlett ended up being so poor because of the war - Yes she was in love with Rhett but she was never satisfied - Yes there is a happy ending but not until the next story. There is a book out called "Scarlett" and the story continues. Probably a movie on that book as well. It was a gread read.

#1.Yankees took evey thing for Southern homes for their own army that's why Scarlet was left poor.
#2.Scarlet DID fall in love with Rhett but it was at the end of the movie and too late considering their crumbling marrige after the death of Bonnie. Rhett had had enough of Scarlet mistreating him.
#3.There's almost a cliff hanger ending. Rhett leaves her with the famous line "Frankly my dear I don't give a damn". But at the very end she plans on going back home to tara and finding a way of getting him back. Semi sad ending.
#4.Ashley was messed up. He loved Melanie but her admired Scarlet for her "passion for living" and "other" qualitys she posessed,if you get what I mean.
Hoped I helped.

Wow, i could desire to confess that i'm somewhat taken aback, yet notwithstanding drives your boat i assume. even however this is fiction as some distance because of the fact the characters are in contact, it does have some historic past based in the action picture. It became into brilliantly made and written. Gee, all this time i presumed i became into the only in the back of the cases by utilising in no way seeing action picture star Wars, Indiana Jones or Harry Potter movies.
