A shrug of the shoulders. It's honest and on some level, quite philosophical.

Are you debating to sign or not to sign to a deaf child? Just curious because there are many thoughts on the subject. I am a teacher and one-third of my class is deaf. While the students have an interpreter, I feel the need to have a relationship with them, so I am learning to sign. My niece is deaf. She is actually a step-niece and was an older teen when I came into the picture. I did not know how to sign so all the communication we had was her little brother interpreting for us. I know a few deaf adults who had different experiences. One is a counselor at our school. His parents never learned sign and he didn't learn to sign until later in life, when he realized he could not communicate with the outside world. He says that he feels like he missed out on so much because he did not know how to sign. If the person has some hearing, you may want to voice while you sign so they get used to lip reading and are using what ever hearing they have. I am watching one of my students struggle in class, because mom has made it very clear that she does not want him to sign or watch the interpreter. He has a cochlear implant, but he is lost.

well im not quite sure what you mean by philosophy in sign language, but i do know that alot of sign language comes from things in the past, such as the word "girl" in sign language. you take your thumb over the cheek bone almost to the chin. this is signed in this way because of how girls wore bonnets and they tied at the chin. it all adds up, you just need to know the history to the "language"
