The processes that shape the Earth are many and complex. The most important one, as far as life is concerned, is plate techtonics. Without this process, life on earth would be impossible. Through this process, elements are recycled making them available for use.
This process also is the major contributor to the texture of the Earth’s surface. It is the catalyst for rheologic processes (mountain building). It is what spurs most volcanism, which builds mountains and ads layers to eroded or thinned landmasses. It is what causes rock formations to fold and bend. It is what generates the pressures that form new rocks or transform old ones.
The other processes are weathering, either mechanical or chemical. These processes break down and relocate materials from one place on the surface of the Earth to another, eventually taking them to places where they are carried beneath the earth’s surface, to be recycled and brought back to the surface once again, to renew the process all over again
