It depends a lot on her level of maturity Some ideas:
Build-a-Bear gift cert (not the same as giving a stuffed animal -- making a bear and getting the outfit is a social experience) if there's a store near her. The gift cert comes in a huge box, ready for the bear.

If she has an IPOD, an ITunes gift card or one of the ITunes animals are good. Another idea if she likes to read is a bookstore gift card with a box of candy or something small as an immediate gift. If her ears are pierced, boxed sets of several types of earrings from a discount store. A Claire's store gift card, if she has a Claire's near her - I0 year old girls love Claire's!

Some drug stores sell VISA gift cards, which my daughter's friends liked getting at birthday parties (their own credit card? Geez). At 10, a few girls called their birthday parties "fund-raisers" and wanted money.

On the less expensive side, my daughter just loved smelly bath foams, lip glosses, and other bath products at that age. She also loved the fuzzy socks (the really bulky ones that you can't possibly wear with shoes). She got some funny t-shirts from friends, but those were too tricky (loved two, hated one).

I would suggest something that makes her feel older. Maybe something like jewelry or a gift card to her favorite store. If you know her size, then pick out something cute!
