In general, typhoon starts to come around the end of July. There are usually more and stronger typhoons in August and September. In June, July, and October, you might see a few strong ones, but not as likely as you would if you travel in August and September.

However, what we talk about here is likelihood. Just like you can never precisely predict when a tornado is coming, you can only estimate and guess that it's more likely to happen in certain months than other time in the year.

So, I would say it's worthwhile to travel in Taiwan in June/July. It is probably safer to travel in June/July than August/September. But always take precautions. Always check the weather condition/forcast before going places. And try to avoid traveling in bad weather. If you must, make sure you make others known where you're going and keep in contact with others.

HI,

It's safe to travel during that period because we get ample warning when a typhoon approaches. Most typhoons last one day, and is gone within 24 hrs. In Taipei it is relatively safe as Taipei is inside a basin surrounded by Mountains. Either way, one takes necessary precautions and don't not go out during this time. We stock up on some food and drinking water for a couple of days, thats about it.

In 2006, most typhoons missed Taiwan directly, many went up to Japan and the rest to the PRC.

You may hit a typhoon in July, but June should be safe. However, you are going to be coming here during some of the hottest weather in Taiwan. It can easily reach the mid-thirties, so make sure you bring lots of the right kind of clothes and sunscreen. I have found that the best sunscreen is Neutrigena (I hope I spelled that correctly). It doesn't smell and it is not greasy, either. If you have any questions, you can check http://www.taiwanfun.com/central/compass/compass.htm (you will also find some other great links on that site) or http://www.tealit.com/. Both may be helpful to your visit. You will also find that most American living here to be a very helpful group of people. Also, if you're going to Taipei, you will find that the tourist maps contain lots of useful info.
Good luck. Enjoy your trip.

As long as you keep track of the weather you should be fine. Its hot. I suggest having a LIGHT long sleeved shirt and LIGHT long pants, but you can get by with sunscreen, a hat, t-shirt and shorts too. Bring an umbrella it rains more often then but that generally is short afternoon showers that are done quickly.

A good site to check is
http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/46751.html

that has the weather forecast for Taichung city for 1 week and typhoon/hurricane updates daily for the whole world. You can type in Taipei in the weather search box or whatever city in Taiwan you plan to travel you can generally find. maybe not small mountain towns but you should get a regional one.
