I dont think that it really matters at the 5-year-old age group, but soccer cleats are way lighter, and he will be faster. However, football cleats support the ankles and reduce injury. So if he is going to be making a lot of cutting, or contact, I would pay the extra $40. But it isnt a big deal at all if he has soccer cleats

For flag football, it doesn't really matter.
For soccer cleats, you'll notice there is no front spike near the toe. But football/softball molded cleats, they have a spike up near the toe. I believe it's for short bursts of speed (running routes or running bases). I wore softball cleats playing soccer, and ended up being uncomfortable over time.

There will be no real difference if they are just molded plastic cleats.

It really shouldn't, given that both sports are played on similar surfaces and the physicality in both sports is roughly the same.

It won't really make a difference until you start playing at more competitive levels.
