Mark McGwire is the only player eligible for the Hall of Fame that isnt in who has hit 500 dingers and he will make it sooner or later. Palmeiro has 4 more yrs to go since he didnt play last year and Sosa,Griffey and Bonds are active. 40 yrs ago 400 home runs was a lock so this also may change over time. Fred McGriff has 492 and just being 8 shy doesnt seem to make him certain(though I think he should be) There are going to be a big jump in people with 500 career home runs in the coming years with Sherfield, Arod,Pujois, Andruw and Chipper Jones, Gueurro,and a bevy of good home run hitters who may put up that many., so 500 roundtrippers in the future may not be the lock that it once was.

That's a good question, and so far you can only say McGwire, as he is the only one eligible who's not it. Palmiero has over 500 but he won't get in, and Sosa may have a tough time. 500 used to be a ticket to the Hall of Fame, but if McGwire was any indication, Baseball writers are going to start looking closely at everything because of steroids.

Mark McGwire is the only one who is illegible for the hall but in not in. Sosa is still playing, maybe and Rafael Palmeiro was forced out of the game because he cheated and lied to the grand jury about his steroid use. He'll never get in the hall either. I also hope that Barry Bonds never gets elected into the hall as well.

In the past 500 homers would certainly get you into the HOF, but in the day of steroids t's tough to say. After all, McGwire got snubbed didn't he?

Mark McGwire will be the first, followed very closely in 2011 by Sosa and Palmeiro. Perhaps even Ken Griffey Jr if he keep injuring himself.
