store credit is sort of like a gift card, except you don't have any actual card, you only have your receipts. then, just like superdork said, they put your money in the bank, and collect interest on it
you can use that credit to purchase anything in the store, but you need to have a ton of games to amount to the 600 dollars (plus tax) that the ps3 costs, especially since the store will give you an average of 5-15 dollars per ps2 game that you probably have. you could probably also get about 45-75 dollars for your ps2
also, if you mostly have sports games, you're out of luck. sports games like madden lose almost all of their value when the next year's game comes out

Well, when you sell your games to Gamestop, instead of giving you money, they give you store credit, which is the equivalent of money. See, by not having to give you the money, GS can use that money to collect interest.
When you're ready to buy a game or system, you can use that store credit towards the purchase of the game or console. Say you want a PS3, and it costs 600 bucks. You have 100 bucks in credit, so you only have to shell out 500 bucks to get the PS3.

yes u could trade all ur gams to gamestop and get a ps3. although u can get a lot more money by selling the games on ebay or through something like that. if u take the games to gamestop you will get almost nothing for them.

they will give you credit for a your USED games, but it probably wont amount to enough credit for a NEW PS3 unless you just have a ridiculous amount of games that are in GOOD/decent condition... So you'll might have to still pay for some of it.
