Why do you "need" a pet?
Do some research and find out what animal would be right for you. Not just as far as what is acceptibal in your family but what you will have the time for, the money to spend, and health considerations of the animal.
People here should not tell you what you should get, You should decide based on your abilities.

get a male canary (bird) they sing the most beautiful songs! you must keep his cage clean, give him bathing water, fresh drinking water, and good clean food. You won't believe the beautiful songs he will sing to you! Only buy from a breeder, females don't sing-pet stores sell both kinds, not careing if they sing or not. You will pay $100-at least.worth every cent, believe me! Why does it need to be bigger than a fist? Why do you say no bird's? I think you really don't need a pet,you probably need a horny girlfriend..one you can put in a cage and admire! Your dad won't have issues-Ha ha!

I would tell anyone to get a ferret...problem is they are not for everyone. They are expensive to buy and maintain and are meant for serious owners only! Despite what many think, they are not rodents. They are very jovial and if you are willing to be a dedicated owner I suggest you do your research first and decide if a ferret could be right for you.
Remember....RESEARCH! Ferrets are not for the faint of heart.

Ferrets are great! They're not rodents, and they're very entertaining and social. However, they do demand a lot of attention, and they're not an animal you can just leave in the cage all the time. They're not too expensive (especially if you adopt them from a ferret rescue like i did-I got two for $70). Good luck in your search!

Rabbits are cool, unless you consider them rodents. My friend's husband had a few tarantulas. He loved those ugly things with all his heart. He would pet them and even give them smooches. Snakes are cool pets, too. You can pet them, but they ain't fuzzy. Horses and cows are cool, if you have room for them. I've always wanted a goat. My mother-in-law says to get a female because the males are dirty, dirty, dirty. And you can keep them in your backyard in the city.

Have you thought about a rabbit? You know they can be litter box trained? And even taught to go outdoors on a leash.
