It was working fine before windows automatically updated, and now I can't open anything. If I'm lucky, sometimes IE will open. Can anyone help me out here?

1) run system restore to a previous restore point.
2) If that does not help then run system file checker

I highly recommend a System Restore.

Start -> All Program -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore

Theoretically, installing an update by using Automatic Updates or installing an update directly by using Windows Update causes System Restore to create a restore point, which means you are in a good boat.

Select "Restore to an earlier date", and select a date on the calendar that is before you installed your updates. Specifically, though, in your case, you will need to look for the event "Software Distribution Service 2.0" on the day you updated. Click it, and proceed with the restore.

After you restore, you should be back to normal. At this point, you might want to consider shutting Automatic Updates off. It's definitely making a concession (you computer won't get the latest and greatest patches), but well worth it if you want to have a usable laptop. (It'd be too difficult to pinpoint the specific update that is causing the havoc on your machine).

You can do this by...

Start -> Control Panel -> Automatic Updates

Good luck!

yes It does exact same with my vaio laptop i now switch the auto update off as every month had to restore c:\ due to these problems.

This is most probably a hardware issue with non compatible drivers.

Hope this helps.

Just go to your Control Panel / add & Remove Programs and remove IE7..... if you can.
I have found many machines with this problem - It appears that IE7 will not run on machines with small memory and it gives spurious errors. removing IE7 will re-install IE6 automatically.
