"holy (whatever was happening), batman!"

Robin’s classic tag line (going back to the New Look era, in the 60’s, when it was borrowed from the TV show with Adam West and Burt Ward) was “Holy ________, Batman!” (either a plain interjection or followed by something along the lines of “What do we do next?”)

The blank was usually filled in with a pun relating to their current case or circumstances. Example: the penguin has stolen several extremely valuable Faberge eggs, and Batman and Robin must figure out how to recover them without risking damage to the precious jewelry. Robin might say, “Holy omelets, Batman! How do we keep the penguin from destroying them?” The pun is on omelets, made by breaking eggs.

This has been largely dropped in recent years (especially since Dick Grayson, the original Robin has grown up and become Nightwing, and other Robins have taken his place.

In the (abysmal) Batman and Robin movie, it is used ONCE, as a sort of tribute to the old days. Batman and Robin pull the Bat Boat up on the short of an artificial island, which is where the criminal hideout is. As Robin steps ashore, he realizes that there is something artificial about the island, and points it out to Batman. “Holy metal rocks, Batman!” Batman gives him a peculiar glare, and it is not clear whether it is because Robin is making noise and possibly alerting their foes of their approach, or because the actors were goofing off and the scene was included as a sort of spoof element. Responding to his questioning glance, Robin points to the ‘rocks’ where they stepped ashore, and says, “Those rocks, they’re metal, and they’re full of holes!” It was very lame, but fit in with the rest of the film.

Nowadays (aside from re-runs of the Batman TV show), it is used only for comic relief. Most heroes would forbid their sidekicks from annoying them with such stupid puns after a very short time.

Actually, what you are thinking of is the "Holy (so & so)" that Burt Ward as Robin used to say on the old 'Batman' live action series. It was carried over into the later cartoons such as 'The Superfriends' but it didn't originate there.

Robin always stated the obvious.

Example, if there were man-eating tigers in the way... He would say "Holy Man-Eating Tigers, Batman!!".
