Do you look at the mantlepiece as you poke the fire ?

Well, taking a different tack to previous answerers, your question reminded me of the following poem:

Billy, in one of his nice new sashes,
Fell in the fire and was burnt to ashes,
Now, although the room grows chilly,
I haven't the heart to poke poor Billy.

(By the way, I KNOW you are being dirty. Dirty thing).

So, bearing in mind poor Billy, I wouldnt look at the fire while I poked it, leave alone the mantlepiece.

No way! I actively look away from the mantlepiece and concentrate on the fire to make sure it's being stoked to keep it burning hot.
