It's not fake, It's scripted.

It was always at least somewhat fake.

The last time professional wresling was close to real was back in the days where pro wresling was a carnival attraction, and hook wrestlers would pull a local person who had been coached in advance and see if the could beat them or last 10 minutes with them.

But in almost all these cases the results were predetermined, because their was usually a cash prize if the local could win. to avoid this cash prize payout, wretlers would have submission holds that it was possible for these untrained wrestlers to break.
These shows were the forerunner of modern pro wrestling.

Their have been times over the years when wrestlers do not "do their job", and try to win when they were meant to loose.

It use to be real, but the matches would take hours long and not as entertaining. Also in 19th century carnivals, there would often be exhibitions in which a skilled wrestler would lay out open challenges to audience members. Spectators from the audience would then step up and try to beat this carnie, but usually they would lose. Occasionally, there would be an audience member with some actual fighting expertise that would be able to match up with the carnie. Therefore, carnivals would bring in a ringer, known as a hooker, and "hook the amateur up", in a competitive match where the amateur wouldn't win.
The first form of professional wrestling as it is known today is believed to have appeared in 1873 in Paris, France where wrestling's first masked wrestler entered the ring, known simply as the Masked Wrestler.

Fake is an incorrect term, but predetermined/scripted is okay. (No, it doesn't mean the same thing.) I believe it became that way when Vince's father passed the business down to his son.

Despite what people tell you, not all professional wrestling is scripted, just the shows you see on tv are, but it is more interesting that way. Pro-wrestling schools, Indy, and maybe Japan are some examples of not being scripted.

I have been watching it for over 30 years and has been fake the whole time.
in the old days they did do more of take the mic and go nuts. but it got way out of hand and they put a stop to it.
they might not always called it a kayfabe, but it's always been there
Vinnie has had a lot to do with the way it is today

I think it always was . But I am sure it was since last 10-11 years .Some years back they came to Ludhiana and some of pro wrestlers were severely beaten up by a constable who was on duty that time.

The outcome has always been somewhat predetermined, however the moves and storylines are more choreographed now.
