I would love to start a veggie garden now! Here in South Carolina, zone 7, I have to wait til the end of March to start gardening. I've been growing some plants in styro-foam cups on the window sill until the weather warms up a bit more.

Some of northern Cal or southern Ore is still having winter. It is definitely not too late. Go to a nursery and see what they have, they will tell you when they expect to get starts. They may have berries and fruit trees onion sets and garlic. Later they will get tomato plants and lettuce and brocolli and cabbage and peppers. Seed packages tell you what temperature is neeeded to germinate seeds. You could start a few things inside. I started a big pot of herbs one year and then put them into seperate pots and some derectly into the ground. Look at the library for a Sunset Western Garden book and you can find out all kinds of information about the kinds of veggies you want to grow that specify your area of Cal. Have Fun!.

It's just about never too late to start a vegie garden! It all depends on what kind of vegies you want to grow and also how long your seasons are in your area. The info tags on seedling punnets should have a guide to the length of time it will take for your plants to mature. I live in southern Australia and we are about to start Autumn (fall) so I expect you would be right at the start of spring. Now should be a great time to start off by sowing some seed inside on a sunny window sill. Gardening is all about trying new things so have a great time!

Do each and every thing 'spitfyr' in basic terms stated with one caveat, start up small !! Too many novices get in over their heads the 1st time they backyard and stop. start up with issues you like and those greens not straight forward or of low high quality interior the food market. For a small backyard you will not be able to triumph over 'raised beds', they produce a super sort of nutrition in a small area. an extremely underused asset is your County Agent, properly spent tax funds at artwork.
