It depends on the college and program. Some don't require any. Others require as many as 3 credits. You have to have learned the foreign language in a school setting if it is required.
Your best bet would be to check with your college's admissions office.

You don't absolutely need it to go to most colleges, but our local high school in St. Louis recommends a year of foreign language. Knowing a foreign language will look good on an application. Knowing it might count as credits if it is absolutely necessary to get in. Check with the college.

If you are a incoming freshman-straight out of high school:
You'll need a minimum of 2 years of a single Foreign Language. 3-4 years are prefered!!!

2 to graduate, but many good colleges (the top 100s) look for at least 3 years straight in same language
and i think it counts if u no another language, if u can show proof, like SAT II, foreign language
i speak japanese, chinese and english but im still taking spanish at school

You usually need to take two foreign language courses as a preliminary requirement for most colleges.

At my high school, they require us to take at least 2 years, but recommend 4. (2 years would be 10 credits, I think?) Talk to your guidance counselor though, they'd probably be able to give you information more specific to your school/what colleges you might be looking at require.
