"Cinco de Mayo ("The Fifth of May" in Spanish) is a national holiday in Mexico which is also widely celebrated in the United States. It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
It is a common misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16th ("Dieciseis de septiembre" in Spanish), but actually it is a celebration of the battle." (WWW.WIKIPEDIA.COM)
As for why people in the USA celebrate it....if you're going to ask that question, then you must also ask yourself why they celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

The U.S. doesn't celebrate it. The Mexicans in the U.S. do. The others that celebrate along with them are not celebrating the actual holiday, but learning the ways of another culture.

You know, that is a good question. Maybe because so many Mexicans are immigrating (legally and illegally) and because they're so close us us as in our allies. It doesn't make sense to me, though 'cause I don't celebrate it.

I think a lot of people celebrate it because they like an excuse to drink.
