I was asking this today. So do you think a lot of ppl have a self-identity or do they just follow the fads and 'norms'? I mean most ppl look the same and like the same things. I.E. ppl with shaggy hair and baggy pants most likely 'indie' music and weed.

I would say most people at least start out following the norm - look at how much teens and tweens want what everyone else is wearing and doing.

As people get more comfortable with their own gifts and uniqueness, they seem to feel freer deviating into their own self-identity.
