Alice Sebold has two excellent books - Lucky, which is her memoir. She was raped the last day of her freshman year of college. This is her story. The other is The Lovely Bones, told from the perspective of a 14 year old murder victim.
I just finished My Sister's Keeper. A young girl sues her parent for medical emancipation, because her parents expect her to donate a kidney to her dying sister. She was created to be a match for her sister to keep her alive.
Kite Runner is a good one - story of Afghanistan culture before and during Taliban rule.
Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series is good as well - sort of fantasy and paranormal. A group of immortal individuals have lost their souls and their job is to protect humans from Daimons (vampires).

Dang, I was going to suggest Twilight! Well, if not that, then how about...New Moon =) (the sequel)
I don't know what kind of books you're looking for...
The Green Rider series, by Kristen Britain, are pretty good (though there're only two out, the third is taking ages!). It's kind of fantasy/adventure.
One of my favourites from when I was a child: Ella Enchanted, by Gail Carson Levine. Yes, I'd still read it over and over again if I could get my hands on it. Much better than the movie--to me, the movie was an utter disappointment.
I loved A Tale of Two Cities (Charles Dickens) and The Man in the Iron Mask (Alexandre Dumas)
Finally, if you like historical fiction, you might try Philippa Gregory. I read her book The Constant Princess, about Queen Katherine of Aragon, but when she was a girl first coming to England to be wed and all that...
How's that? =)

You should definitely read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer because it is the greatest book of all time. Most people can read it in a day even though it is 500 pages long.

Cry to heaven by Anne Rice....Spartacus by Howard Fast(outlawed during the Mccarthy era).....The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas, who also wrote the Three Musketeers & The man in the iron mask.....The Thornbirds by Colleen McCullough...brilliant book.....The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (An amazing classic) & The Good Earth by Pearl Buck, lastly A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by betty Smith.
There, many classics and page turners for you!!! I have read all of these and in some cases multiple times!!! I really hope that this helps you!!! Spartacus will blow your mind. It had to be released in England as the McCarthy era had Howard fast black balled when it was written.
I hope that you read Cry to heaven by Anne Rice...it is NOT about vampires, but about the Italian Castrati, thus it is truth intermixed with fiction, rather historical fiction....
Happy reading!!!!! I gave y usome of my top faves here!!
Thanks,
Lioncourt
